“How much farther?” I asked, looking up at the small mountain Lucien had me climb. The sun was already setting, the sky a deep orange beautifully merged with purple. I’d wanted to just stay out there and look at it, but Lucien had insisted he knew a better place, so I’d followed him—behind the houses and across a small meadow to a small green mountain barely four miles away.

And then…

“We’re here.”

He reached for my hand and I took it without thinking. Then, he pulled me up, behind a tree trunk and around a large grey rock.

“Oh, wow,” I breathed when I saw the view—the sun was setting right across from us, and the colors of the sky were otherworldly. No way could they be real—and the way the clouds gathered around them, like they wanted to dip and dive into those colors, too, made it all the more magnificent.

“Come here,” Lucien said, tugging at my hand, and he took us up a couple of square rocks, and close to a bunch of trees that stood apart from the rest surrounding them. I could see why—on the biggest branch of the one in the middle hung two chains as thick as my wrists, and a thick piece of wood connected them.

“You’re joking,” I said, smiling and shaking my head.

Behind the swing, there were two seesaws, one of them broken, and a metal slide painted blue. They all looked like they were put there by mistake, like someone had misplaced them, then forgot all about it—except the swing.

“A playground—for the kids, no less. Like the edge of the mountain isn’t right there.” He chuckled, showing me the rocky edges just ten feet away. Then he bowed to me, waving his hands toward the swing. “Your Highness.”

“Thank you, kind sir,” I said, smiling so big my cheeks hurt. I went and sat on the swing—by some miracle, it fit me just right, and Lucien was behind me, kissing the top of my head.

“It’s the best view I found around here. Look at that,” he whispered, nodding ahead at the setting sun, at the colors, at the green earth underneath…

“It’s perfect,” I breathed. Even a painting couldn’t do it justice.

“Hold on tight, little fox,” Lucien said, and began to push me forward.

My laughter echoed down the mountain, but nobody else was there with us. I was so happy I could burst into a thousand ribbons. I realized it wasn’t a big deal, just a swing. But to me, it was huge. To be able to share something so simple with Lucien in the middle of my chaotic life, it meant everything to me.

He swung me slowly until the colors dipped in darkness, and the sun was barely there anymore. Then, he wrapped his arms around me from behind and kissed my cheek.

“You’re even more beautiful than that,” he whispered in my ear. “Imagine that.”

I laughed again. “I think you just love me, Mr. Di Laurier.”

He squeezed me to his chest. “More than the moon loves the dark.
